Hiwa-i-te-rangi

We have been learning about Matariki since, this week it is the Matariki Holiday.

Our main activity during cybersmart today was to create a star, insert a picture and decorate it as well as having 2 dreams, hopes, desires or wishes (Hiwa-i-te-rangi star) that we want to accomplish over the next year.

What did your class do to celebrate Matariki?

Coding

Today for our cybersmart lesson, we learnt how to code.

Whaea Stacey told us that coding can teach us many skills:

We then got a chance to have a go at many different coding websites. Toxicode from Compute.it and Hour of Code were the favourites in our class. We really had to remember to just read the instructions to get the coding right.

Before we got to go onto our coding though, we added to our own blogs the Google Forms we had learnt to make last time, which link in with our statistics topic. If you have time, please go and give our quizzes or surveys a go!

Hoaxes and Fakes

Today, Whaea Stacey started the lesson off with showing us a cute video of a pig rescuing a goat, we all thought this was pretty cute and it made us feel all warm and fuzzy. THEN she showed us another video which showed how this video was all set up and fake!

We discussed again that not everything we see online, or on TV (or the movies) are real and just how easily things can be faked.

We looked at 3 different pictures and what we thought was fake with each one or how people could fake these images using remove.bg or photoshop. The pictures were all very convincing!

After that it was time to create! We created our own magazine covers with fake images and fake titles and headlines. We could make our magazine about something that interested us.

They’re on our individual blogs, but you can also check some of them out here:

Fake News

Today we learnt how to spot a fake URL – looking for things like numbers in the address, or a weird ending (like .com.co) or a really long URL might mean that it is not a real address.

We had to sort through lots of websites to decide whether we thought the URLs were real or not; some looked real but actually had q’s instead of p’s or 0’s instead of o’s so we had to be very careful when looking.

After we got to create our own Fake News article – we came up with a title that would make others want to read our news and then made a fake picture using remove.bg that linked in with our title. We also had to come up with a fake URL.

Our pictures will be on our blogs, but you can also check out some below:

What is Media?

Today we learnt about Media. We discussed what we thought media was, some of us knew it was news and what we saw on the TV or heard on the Radio. Some of us also thought it might be linked to Social Media. We now understand that media is used to inform, educate and entertain.

We then filled in this sheet where we had to change the background colour if we had engaged in that type of media over the past 24 hours.

We used this to then make a poster using Google Draw to show different medias we had consumed over the past 24 hours (or the weekend).

Here are some of our posters:

What types of media have you used in the past 24 hours?

Google Slides Fun

Kia ora Koutou!

We have been working on creating our own animations or pick-a-paths using Google Slides.

We learned that for an animation you have to start with an interesting background (like space or a car racing track!). We then inserted a picture that went with our background (like a rocket ship or car) or something that didn’t to make it even funnier (like a cartoon character).

With a pick-a-path we could do a quiz about something that interested us. We needed to plan what we wanted to ask and use control + k to link where we wanted our choices to go. While no-one in our class did, we did learn that you could use a pick-a-path format to create a choose your own adventure type story.

The next steps in an animation are to duplicate the slide (using control + d or control + c, control + v) and make one small change. Then you keep repeating this cycle until you are happy with your animation. We will finish these next week and share them on our individual blogs – so make sure you check them out!

Have you made animations or a pick-a-path before?

Magic Numbers

Kia ora everyone,

If you would like to have a go at our magic trick, please choose a number between 1 and 63 and let us know which card/s you can see it on. We will then guess your number!

All About Us 2024!

Kia ora and welcome to our first blog post for 2024!

In Team Glory, we do GLORIOUS Stuff such as: sports, maths through games and puzzles, handwriting, circle time and hopefully we will get to have a sleepover later in the year (but we need to get enough points throughout the year for that to happen!)

Our awesome teacher Mr P taught some magical maths using special cards: you can pick any number between 1 and 63, and we will be able to work it out using one simple question. If you want to know more, comment and ask us 😉.

Manakau School is a country school, this means that it is not in a town but near farms. We also get to have an Ag Day at the end of each year. This means we get to decorate baked goods (like cupcakes), we can bring in farm animals [(lambs, calves and kids (goats)] that we have been raising for judging. We can also make miniature gardens and we have an arts and crafts morning the day of. If you ever in Manakau early November, you should pop in and check it out!

Another awesome thing about being a country school (and at Manakau) is the HUGE play areas that you can have. We have  2 playgrounds, 1 really big field, a multipurpose turf to play lots of sports on (our turf is awesome as we can play on it in all weathers!) as well as 2 forests, which we can play in sometimes, we can’t at the moment because it is overgrown! We also have a bike track, we can bring wheels any day of the week to use this.

We also have some school chickens, which we get eggs from. We also have a vegetable garden with which our juniors use for cafe days.

Thank you for stopping by!

Individual Blogs

We are so excited that we now have our own individual blogs to blog on for the rest of this year and into next year and so on!

You can find our individual blogs on the right hand side of our home page – please click on them to check out what we are getting up to!

We have all made a blog profile using Google Draw to introduce ourselves to the world!

We can’t wait to hear from you!

Interland

Today in cybersmart, we learnt about interland, a cool game online which allows you to learn as you play about being Internet Smart, Strong, Alert and Kind. If you get all 4 certificates you get another one which says you are Internet Awesome!

Throughout the games you have to answer questions (like how to keep safe, and how to spot scams) as you are playing them.

Most of us succeeded in finishing one or two levels – but some people actually finished all four!

Here are some of our certificates!

Have you played interland before? Which was your favourite land?
